The Phil & Lit Ghost Story Award

The Ghost Story, a guilty pleasure of both literary and genre writers, deserves, not only greater recognition, but more ink devoted to the crafting and development of its spectral form.

For inspiring examples of the genre, why not read the ghost stories of Charles Dickens, M. R. James and Susan Hill.

Ghost stories between 1,000 and 4,000 words.

The Phil & Lit Philosophical Essay Award

The Philosophical Essay has to a large extent become the preserve of academia, and is often impenetrable to even the educated reader.  Philosophy can address many areas which concern our everyday lives, whilst still being written in a lucid and lyrical style.

For thought provoking examples of the philosophical essay, why not read the work of John Ruskin, Bertrand Russell and A. C. Grayling.

Essays up to 4,000 words, addressing the question:

What is the good life and how can we live it?

Art, and literature in particular, is for me a creative synthesis between form and content, and I look forward to reading entries which pursue this ethos.
