This is one of our working spaces at our Hexham premises. This area is where courses take place, and where members of our library can relax or study.

Here's what's new for 2020!

We are proud to present the brochures for the new term at The Phil & Lit! The Epiphany term runs from the 13th January until the 4th April and will be packed with subjects such as Fine Art, the Philosophy of Religion, Tai Chi, Poetry, Photography and more. So click below to see the full brochure and send us a message if you'd like to book a course.

Welcome to the website of The Philosophical and Literary Society.  The Phil & Lit, now with teaching rooms in both Carlisle and Hexham, is a refuge of lifelong learning, as well as an independent library with books and journals focusing on Philosophy, Literature and Creative Writing.  Other subjects taught at the Phil & Lit have included Art History, Religious Ethics, Calligraphy, Tai Chi, Music Appreciation, Photography and more.  Guest speakers are also invited, which not only includes Doctors and Professors from universities, but also published writers offering workshops in their craft.  The purpose of the Phil & Lit venture is to rekindle the passion for adult education, and to better understand the human condition through thought-provoking and creative courses.
